Winemaker Notes

A massive yet elegant expression of the terroir, the Patrimony 2016 is a deep purple-black wine that delivers the full experience from beginning to end. On the nose, it profoundly exhibits floral characteristics that include crème de cassis, violets, espresso roast, truffles, and chocolate. This wine is tremendously concentrated with extremely high phenolics often referred to by Daniel Daou as a “rare phenomenon”. On the Palate, it is very savory and includes notes of black fruit preserves, licorice, cooked blueberries, spice box, and cigar box. Additional notes of crème de cassis and chocolate accompany this full-bodied wine with a firm tannin structure that delivers a very long finish. While muscular, it is elegant and balanced delivering a great deal of pleasure and complexity. Built for the long haul, it should be laid down for several years before consumed.

Critical Acclaim

Jeb Dunnuck - 98pts

What can be considered the flagship of the estate, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a sensational Cabernet Sauvignon that can stand up the best out there. Incredibly pure notes of cassis, spice box, graphite, lead pencil shavings, and a terrific sense of minerality all flow from this pure Paso Robles beauty that shows the quality that can be achieved from these magical limestone soils. Full-bodied and powerful, yet seamless and balanced, enjoy bottles over the coming 15-20 years or more.

Tasting Panel - 98pts

Grainy tannins take hold as the dense liquid saturates the palate with pencil shavings, cocoa powder, and roasted coffee. Licorice coats the tongue as would a fine Sambuca, making for an unctuous and hedonistic experience. A profusion of blackberry preserves and a hint of coconut surface, connecting to the wine’s inner brawn before sweetening and mollifying themselves on the exquisite finish.

Wine Enthusiast - 96pts

Deep and darkly hued in the glass while rich and intense but still balanced on the nose, this luxury-level bottling by the Daou brothers begins with aromas of blackberry, wood spice, lilac, cola and char on the nose. Lavish, expertly polished tannins frame the sip, where rich flavors of cassis, toast and coffee extract are powerful yet refined.

James Suckling - 95pts

A firm, racy red with blackberry, blueberry and dark-chocolate character. Solid tannins. Very pretty and long. This is a plush, yet a reserved red for the area.
